Details below

The CYMC Island Jazz Intensive is a one-week music camp where students have the opportunity to focus on jazz improvisation and performance. Each year, we assemble some of Canada’s leading educators and performers to provide an exciting and engaging learning experience for musicians of all ages and ability levels.

Island Jazz welcomes all instruments, including woodwinds, brass, rhythm section (piano, guitar, electric or acoustic bass and drums) of ALL LEVELS, from beginner to advanced. From aspiring musicians learning the fundamentals of improvisation to experienced performers looking to deepen their understanding of advanced jazz concepts, students will leave the Island Jazz Intensive with plenty of new ideas and a stronger grounding in improvisatory techniques.

A rigorous schedule of masterclasses on your instrument, improvisation and theory classes (beginner, intermediate or advanced), as well as a small combo and big band rehearsals, fill the week. Daily jam sessions with faculty members, give the students an opportunity to expand their creative horizons and work on the concepts explored through the week. Ensembles formed early in the week based on goals and ability levels, will play at the Wednesday jam sessions and the camp culminates with a concert on Saturday afternoon/evening featuring the Big Band and all combos.

Past CYMC Jazz Alumni include Diana Krall, Seamus Blake, Ingrid Jensen and many others.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to perform, jam and get real, practical jazz instruction in the stunning setting of the Comox Valley!
