2 years minimum experience on your instrument

July 12 – 18, 2020

The CYMC Island Jazz Intensive is a one-week music camp where students have the opportunity to focus on jazz improvisation and performance. Each year, we assemble some of BC’s leading educators and performers to provide an exciting and engaging learning experience for musicians of all ages and ability levels

Unfortunately, the in-person Classical, Piano, and Jazz programs will not be happening this summer but CYMC is currently working to create an online version of the camp that will provide students with an exciting and engaging opportunity to study with world-class instructors. We will reach out to all registrants once these programs have been finalized.

Island Jazz welcomes all instruments, including woodwinds, brass, rhythm section (piano, guitar, electric or acoustic bass and drums), strings, and vocalists of ALL LEVELS, from beginner to advanced. From aspiring musicians learning the fundamentals of improvisation to experienced performers looking to deepen their understanding of advanced jazz concepts, students will leave the Island Jazz Intensive with plenty of new ideas and a stronger grounding in improvisation techniques.

A rigorous schedule of master classes on your instrument, improvisation and theory classes (beginner, intermediate or advanced), as well as small combo and big band rehearsals fill the week. Listening sessions, presented by various faculty members, give the students an opportunity to expand their creative horizons.  There are numerous opportunities to jam with peers and faculty members, both organized and spontaneous.  Ensembles, formed early in the week based on goals and ability levels, will play at the Friday evening jam session in Cumberland, and the camp culminates with a concert on Saturday night featuring the Big Band and combos.

Past CYMC Jazz Alumni include Diana Krall, Seamus Blake, Ingrid Jensen and many others. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to perform, jam and get real, practical jazz instruction in the stunning setting of the Comox Valley!

Students wishing to be considered for scholarships should submit completed application forms and audition material by May 30th, 2020. Scholarship winners will be announced by mid-June.

Our world-class faculty features musicians from Vancouver Island and Vancouver. CYMC is also excited to announce our new Artist in Residence Program that will bring a different world-class performer and educator to the camp each year.
