Robert Creech (Bob to those who knew him) died on December 20, 2019, in County Clare, Ireland, at the age of 91.  The Comox Valley will remember him fondly as the inspiration and founder of the Comox Valley’s summer school for music and performing arts students, as well as a brilliant French Horn virtuoso.

With his friends and colleagues, including conductor Simon Streatfeild and Comox Valley’s well-loved Beryl Regier, Bob started C.Y.M.C.  (now Comox Valley Youth Music Centre) in 1967.  C.Y.M.C. has become Canada’s longest-running summer music school.  It was a place where young musicians played alongside an amazing array of Bob’s international professional colleagues.  In those days, the Comox Valley was a small, quiet, unknown gem of a place and, before personal computers, CDs, internet (or even cassette tapes), there was little access to quality classical music.  Every summer top name performers arrived from all over the continent, along with hundreds of young musicians, to perform orchestral and operatic works in a gorgeous summer setting.

Robert Creech also started a center in Toronto for prospective professional musicians.  It is now known as the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

He spent some time living in England, as the CEO of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, then moved to the west coast of Ireland, where he spent the last years of his life.  Being passionate about music and opportunities for young players, he started “Music on the Shannon”, another summer music school, which continues to this day.

Bob Creech was so proud of the Comox Valley’s continuing support of C.Y.M.C., which is very much alive and well.  This year’s program runs from June 27 to July 18. There will be classical strings, jazz, and musical theatre events.  NEWSIES is our MT production and will take place at the Sid Williams Theatre.  Watch for details of shows on this website and our Facebook page. CYMC is a not-for-profit organization, offering financial support for students in need.  Our policy is not to turn anyone away – we rely heavily on donations and grants and all assistance is gratefully received.  If you are interested in supporting C.Y.M.C. with time or financial support, we would love to hear from you.  Contact or call 250 338 7463.

CYMC is pleased to announce the 2019 Raffle winners

Farley Misfud 2017

Farley Mifsud

Farley Mifsud, a 16-year-old student of CYMC (Comox Valley Youth Music Centre), was the lucky recipient of a one-year loan of a Morgan guitar last year. The guitar was generously donated to CYMC a few years ago by a long-term supporter, who believed that a high-quality instrument would enrich the learning and playing experience of young guitar students.

As soon as Farley received the guitar last year, it had a profound, life-changing effect on him. (more…..)
